Glass Pieces Stolen From Denver Botanic Gardens 'Chihuly' Exhibit

DENVER (CBS4) - Officials with the Denver Botanic Gardens say they are baffled by the theft of several glass pieces from an art installation that's part of their popular "Chihuly" exhibit.

On the morning of Aug. 22 employees at the gardens noticed that three glass "cat tail" pieces were missing when they opened.

CEO Brian Vogt says the pieces are mounted into the ground and are heavy and difficult to maneuver. So far he says they aren't sure how someone got onto the property when no one was around and how they were able to leave with them.

"I just can't even imagine why you would do it," Vogt told CBS4. "It's not something you can sell in the open market because it would be immediately be identifiable as the piece that was stolen, but you are robbing people of this incredible experience."

Authorities are hoping someone will notice the stolen glass pieces and report their location to police.

Vogt says because the three pieces alone do not make a piece of art it's hard to give them a value.

The gardens isn't going into specifics, but they said they are making changes to their security procedures in the wake of the incident.

"Chihuly" runs through Nov. 30 at the Denver Botanic Gardens.
