Homeowner, Robbers Shoot At Each Other During Car Theft

DENVER (CBS4) - A car theft victim and the suspects exchanged gunfire early Monday morning as the crooks fled in the woman's SUV.

The crime happened at approximately 2 a.m. at a home on the 7000 block of East Exposition.

The suspects apparently got in the house through a bathroom and then burglarized home. Then they stole the homeowner's blue 2012 Toyota Highlander.

In the process, the homeowner caught the robbers in the act and fired at them. The suspects fired back at the woman. A bullet hit a neighbor's van across the street and shattered the back windshield. No one was injured.

"At about 2 a.m., I thought I heard shots and I didn't think anything of it. I went back to sleep," the van owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

Neighbors said break-ins are becoming more common in the area.

"The house next door to me has been robbed three times," a neighbor said. "That tells you something about the security the neighborhood. The ideas of people shooting back … because then the bullets can go anywhere. That in itself is pretty scary."

Police said it's not clear how many people were involved in the robbery. They said the stolen Highlander has the license plate ACF9582.
