Mi Casa Provides Resources For Self Sufficiency

DENVER (CBS4)- A local organization is focusing on helping those who need help get back on their feet — by relying on themselves.

Mounting bills became too much to handle for Nicole Boggs, a single mother of four. She lost her home and nearly lost her faith before Mi Casa taught her how to achieve her goals.

Mi Casa Resource Center helps Latino and other working families become economically self-sufficient through career development, after school programs and community service. The organization also helps with housing, transportation and child care.

Boggs, 40, keeps her resume and cover letter up-to-date. Until recently Boggs had been a stay-at-home mom for nearly 15 years.

“I tried looking for a job. They are asking for resumes and I’m like, ‘I don’t have a resume. I don’t even know how to write a resume,'” said Boggs.

After a broken marriage and an abuse relationship, it was hard for Boggs, a mother of four, to find work.

“I was beat down so bad, thinking I wasn’t worth anything,” said Boggs.

A local shelter introduced her to Mi Casa.

“If you are committed and ready to do whatever it takes to be successful then Mi Casa is a place that can help you,” said Mi Casa CEO and Executive Director Christine Marquez-Hudson.

Marquez-Hudson credits a $690,000 W.K. Kellog grant for supporting Mi Casa’s self sufficiency programs.

“I don’t think I’ve had a prouder moment than when I called my kids to say, ‘Guess what, I got a job!’ and they were so excited,” said Boggs.

The Mi Casa staff helped teach Boggs how to better her life. Now she is teaching her children the value of standing on their own two feet.

“To be able to show them, it’s okay, we all make mistakes. We can be stronger and do better. And that’s something I have been able to do,” said Boggs.

Boggs said she is proud to earn a paycheck for working. She is saving money and plans to rent a home for her family.
