DENVER (CBS4)– Police in Denver arrested a mother in connection with the death of her 2-month-old child.
Kelsy Newell-Skinner was arrested Monday after the death of her infant child. Newell-Skinner, 21, is being held on investigation of facing felony child abuse charges.
According to the arrest affidavit, Newell-Skinner’s mother found the child with significant injuries and drove her to Parker Adventist Hospital on Sunday.
Because of the child’s extensive life-threatening injuries she was transported to Children’s Hospital by ambulance. Police said the child had severe bruising to her head and what appeared to be at least one bite mark on her thigh area. The child died on Thursday.
Newell-Skinner has two children with her current boyfriend, the 2-month-old and a 15-month old son. She also has three additional children under the age of five from another relationship. All five children live with her in a small apartment in the 10700 block of East Dartmouth Avenue.
According to the arrest affidavit, Newell-Skinner texted the father of her three older children that “she must have been very drunk last night because she just woke up and the baby had been beaten.”
Another text message stated “the baby’s head was banged up and her eyes were bruised and swollen shut.”
An additional text message stated that “she did not even remember last night and felt horrible.”
Newell-Skinner remains in custody on $500,000 bail.
