Former Inmate Sues Denver Deputy Seen Slamming Him

DENVER (AP) – A former Denver jail inmate who was handcuffed and shackled when a deputy pushed him into a courtroom wall is suing the city.

The lawsuit filed by Anthony Waller Tuesday in federal court says Deputy Brady Lovingier violated his rights when he slammed him face first into a metal window frame during Waller’s court appearance in September 2011. Waller is seeking $5 million in damages.

Lovingier, who was suspended, has said he used force because Waller was aggressive. Video shows him grabbing Waller and shoving him into the glass wall, seemingly unprovoked.

City Attorney Scott Martinez says officials take the claims seriously.

The suit comes two days after city councilors gave initial approval of a $3.3 million offer to settle similar jail-abuse claims filed by another former inmate, Jamal Hunter.
