Lakewood Police Search For Copper Thieves

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Lakewood are searching for three suspects who stole copper wire from an RTD light rail platform.

The three targeted the Lamar Light Rail Station located at 6363 W. 13th Ave. in Lakewood on July 1.

Police said they used a large bolt cutter to cut and remove copper wire which is used to ground trash cans, metal benches and a metal catenary pole which supports power lines for the RTD trains.

All metal fixtures at the RTD light rail platforms have the ground wire as a safety precaution in case a power line was to fall and strike the metal objects.

If the copper ground wire is removed from the metal fixtures it's a safety concern to the general public.

Anyone who recognizes the suspects in the pictures is asked to all Detective Josh Stramel with the Lakewood Police Department or contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). You can text to CRIMES (274637) then title DMCS and enter your message or send an e-mail to metro-denvercrimestoppers.com. If the information you provide leads to the arrest and charging of a wanted individual, you can receive a cash reward up to $2,000.
