Doctor Wants To Videotape Holmes For Better Record

DENVER (AP) — A doctor who will evaluate James Holmes' sanity says he wants to videotape the examination because it will provide a more accurate and thorough record than handwritten notes.

Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in a 2012 shooting attack on a Denver-area movie theater. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

In a letter to the judge released Thursday, the doctor also offers to destroy the videotape after his report is complete.

Holmes' lawyers don't want the doctor to videotape the examination.

Holmes must undergo a second sanity evaluation this summer because the judge ruled the first one was inadequate.

The name of the doctor who will conduct the second evaluation hasn't been released.

Holmes' trial is tentatively scheduled to start Dec. 8.
