American Flag Stolen From Army Mom's Front Yard

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- A Colorado Springs woman calls it unforgivable after someone stole an American flag from her front yard. The flag was a celebration of her son who is serving in the U.S. Army.

"I went in the house and was in there five minutes at the most and when I came out someone had stolen the flag," said victim Kathy Dawson.

Dawson had just purchased an American flag to celebrate her son's new rank in the Army.

"But I think it's disrespectful to the Army, to my son, and to the flag to do something like that," said Dawson.

A neighbor's surveillance camera captured the crime.

Douglas Swain stepped forward with the video after seeing the story on the news in hopes someone will recognize the suspect.

"You see them slowly pull up where the flag is, can't really tell if it's a lady or gentleman who gets out of the vehicle," said Swain.

While it's difficult to see the actual crime on video, there is a pretty good shot of the car the suspect drove away in.

Dawson still can't believe anyone would do such a thing, "To steal an American flag is unforgivable. And just know you aren't going to deter from our party and the celebration, we're going to continue and we are going to have fun."

Dawson hopes whoever took the flag will just return it.
