Scooter Rider Injured In 'Terrifying' Hit & Run

DENVER (CBS4) - A 35-year-old scooter rider is in the hospital after a driver hit him and took off in a crime witnesses described as terrifying.

The crime happened Tuesday night at 17th and Race Street in the City Park neighborhood. Denver police say the driver of a white sedan, possibly a Mazda, hit the man on a scooter and then drove off.

The driver suffered serious injuries as witnesses told CBS4 he was screaming when he was taken to the hospital.

"It was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen happen to someone on two wheels," Justin Holle said. "This car came flying through, as fast as can be. (The victim) on a scooter locked up the brakes and we were rooting him on, he nearly made it, he was twisting sideways and just caught the rear end of this vehicle and as soon as he hit, man this kid exploded up into the air and landed pretty ferociously.

"And this car never stopped. They just took off."

Officers say two people were inside the sedan, which was last seen traveling northbound on Race.

Police blocked off Race from 14th to 17th while they processed the scene and collected evidence. The scooter was laying in the middle of the road after the crash.

Police say the sedan could have damage on its driver's side. They are asking anyone with information about the case to contact them.

The victim's condition hasn't been released.
