Pre-Evacuation Orders Lifted Near Eightmile Fire

CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters feel confident about the progress they're making containing a fire on about 500 rugged acres near Canon City.

The Eightmile Fire was 40 percent contained Tuesday and some of the 300 firefighters and equipment called in to manage the fire are being sent home.

Because of the gains, warnings for residents of 16 homes near the fire who had told to be ready to evacuate were lifted Monday night.

The remaining firefighters are mopping up hot spots and strengthening containment lines, with some help from cooler weather.

They're dedicating the day's work to the 14 firefighters who died 20 years ago this Sunday at the fire on Storm King Mountain near Glenwood Springs. They began with a moment of silence.
