In just over four months, the 2014 election will be in the history books. However, most of the time between now and then, all of us will be inundated with political ads of on every possible form of media.
But with the primary season now in the rear view mirror, we are set to enjoy a very short ceasefire. My humble advice is to enjoy it while you can.
The most annoying pop up ads and aggravating commercials will be fond and wonderful memories when we are being hit from all sides by ads trying to convince us the direst of circumstances associated with a particular candidate or issue.
And even though we seem pretty far away from Election Day, with what’s at stake on the Colorado ballot, the millions being poured into campaigns will lengthen our election season.
If Colorado only had one big race, we would still see the ad campaign begin fairly early. But we have at least three races capturing national attention this season, and that’s not counting our race for Governor, which won’t be a slouch over the airwaves.
The U.S. Senate Race between Mark Udall and Cory Gardner, the 6th Congressional District race between Mike Coffman and Andrew Romanoff and the epic battle over fracking and local control will bring unprecedented amounts of national money into Colorado.
But while the sources of money may seem inexhaustible, the space to use that money is certainly finite.
Only so many ads can be purchased in October and September, the laws of political physics mean that some time in August, and yes, some in July, must be used.
This may seem silly, but if you think about it, we’ve already seen the ads make appearances on our media for several weeks, even for non-primary races. Political ads have yet to kick the regular ads we are all used to seeing off of the airwaves, but it is simply a matter of time.
Revel in the spirited promises of Dealin’ Doug and savor the wacky jokes of Rocky’s Shagman while you can. In a little over a month, you will stop seeing these esteemed Colorado gentlemen and you won’t see them again until we are seeing ads for early Christmas shopping sales.
I realize that it is odd to receive advice on enjoying commercials and other advertisements simply because they will be replaced by others soon. But I think the reason it is a big deal is that the vast majority of political ads are not hopeful, they are negative. That much negative energy means all of the media around us becomes predominantly negative. It’s not surprising that many of us hate it so much, because it really is a downer.
So enjoy the ads that want to make you feel better while you can. Soon, almost every ad is going to want to scare you or at least disgust you.
You can’t say you weren’t warned.
