DENVER (AP) – Two-term congressman Scott Tipton has won the Republican primary election for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, defeating tea party activist David Cox.

Tipton overcame an anti-incumbent campaign in Tuesday’s primary from Cox, a tea party activist from Mesa County.

Colorado’s 3rd District is the state’s largest, encompassing most of western Colorado in a district about the size of Arkansas.

Tipton is a former pottery dealer and state lawmaker from Cortez who was first elected in 2010. In that race, he defeated former Rep. John Salazar, a Democrat who is now state Agriculture Secretary.

In November, Tipton will face former state Sen. Abel Tapia of Pueblo, who was unopposed on Tuesday.
