Suspects In Crime Spree Use Young Child As Part Of Plan

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver police are warning homeowners about a crime spree that involves a young child.

There have been several burglaries recently in southwest Denver along West Mississippi Avenue between Federal Boulevard and Sheridan Boulevard. The burglars are getting in through small, unlocked windows and doggie doors.

Witnesses say they have seen two to three Hispanic men in the area at the time of the break-ins.

Neighbors have reported that a young child is coming to their doors asking if anyone has seen a lost chihuahua.

"Somebody ... used a child to get to the door to knock and determine if anyone is home in the house," said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Jackson said they did that to determine if the house is empty so they can burglarize it.

Witnesses said it appears that the child is accompanied by a man who is standing out in the street waiting for them.

Authorities say there are usually more burglaries in the warmer summer months because people leave their windows open.
