John Elway Knows From Experience It's Possible To Get Back To The Super Bowl

DENVER (CBS4) - It's been a long time since anybody has called John Elway an amateur at anything, but that's exactly what he is at the game of golf. After a good showing in the opening round of the Colorado Senior Open, Elway sat down with CBS4's Tom Helmer to talk about his golf game and the state of the Denver Broncos.

"I love it. I love to be able to play competitive golf. It's a lot of fun for me, I don't get to do it a lot," Elway said. "It gets the butterflies going and I like to be able to play golf when you have to make a shot and you have to count every ball and putt everything out.

As far as the Broncos go, Elway was involved in last year's Super Bowl for the first time not as a player. He was fully invested in the game but had no control over what happened on the field.

"I got used to it when it comes down to being at the football games during the regular season. You get used to it. I obviously haven't played for 15 years now. Being involved in the Arena League and now with the Broncos for three years, you get used to that," he said. "I think when I was sitting there watching the Super Bowl I was frustrated for our team just because I know how hard that game is.

"When you make a mistake those mistakes seem to get magnified and we just couldn't make anything happen, get something going. I really felt bad for our football team because they worked so hard, they had a tremendous year. It's just a disappointing loss. Having been through three of those losses, I know how they felt."

In the offseason Elway dominated free agency by picking up big-name players such as DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib and Emmanuel Sanders.

"We got better, and if you look at paper, and that's the key thing, when we got done with that Super Bowl, we had a great year, but it wasn't what we wanted. So my goal, that's where my job really starts is to try and make us a better football team, and with the additions and free agents with T.J. Ward, Aqib and DeMarcus on the defensive side and Emmanuel on the offensive side and the draft picks we have … we're going to get better as a football team."

He said it's now up to the coaches and players to show that the team is better.

Helmer asked Elway how difficult it is to get back to the Super Bowl for a second time in a row.

"It's hard but I think it was also hard to get back where we did last year after the Baltimore loss. I think that as long as you keep that drive and we have not accomplished that goal we set out to accomplish, and that's to be world champions, we've got the right mindset."

He said when he played the Broncos got to the Super Bowl three out of four years, so he knows it can be done.
