With Blood Supply Dangerously Low, Bonfils Pleads For Donors

DENVER (CBS4) - The Bonfils Blood Center is warning the blood supply is dangerously low heading into the holiday weekend.

According to Bonfils, the need for blood donors is at its highest level of the year and they are requesting that Coloradans donate blood to help get the supply back on track.

In a statement, Jessica Maitland, vice president of marketing and community development at Bonfils, said with Memorial Day being the unofficial kickoff to summer, donations decline because Coloradans leave town to enjoy summer destinations.

"However this year we've seen fewer donors than usual since March and in the last two weeks our hospital partners have been utilizing more blood than usual," Maitland said. "This combination makes for a dangerous situation in our state, so we're asking residents of all blood types to help get our state's blood supply back to a stable level."
