Actions Will Haunt Murder Suspect For Rest Of His Life
BRIGHTON, Colo. (CBS4) - The trial is underway for a man accused of killing two teenage boys and then burying their bodies 150 miles away.
In their opening statements, prosecutors said William Otto, 43, killed the boys because he wanted to hide a secret -- that he wanted young boys to perform sexual favors.
Otto faces two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Gustavo Danny Espinosa-Gambia, 16, and Jonathan Gonzalez, 15, as well as contributing to the delinquency of minors and destroying evidence.
The defense told the jury Otto's actions were self-defense when he felt threatened in a robbery plot the two teen victims planned to carry out. But the defense did admit his actions after the shooting were inappropriate and will haunt him the rest of his life.
Prosecutors said Otto actually marked the graves with a cross which helped investigators find the bodies.
One defense attorney said, "Otto takes people under his wing and helps them. He is trying to provide a safe haven for kids and take care of them."
Neighbors have said in the past Otto's house at 8207 High Street in unincorporated Adams County was a party house where alcohol was given freely to minors.
Early in the investigation, police said two teens had cellphone video of Otto propositioning them for sex and were trying to extort $20,000 from him.
