Denver Tops Drexel 15-6 In NCAA Lacrosse Quarters
NEWARK, Del. (AP/CBS4) — Erik Adamson’s six goals led fifth-seeded Denver to a 15-6 victory over Drexel on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
The Pioneers (16-2) reached the Final Four for the third time in four seasons. They will meet top-seeded and defending national champion Duke at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Saturday.
Denver has won 13 games in a row.
The Pioneers trailed 3-2 early in the first quarter before they scored the last eight goals of the first half. Drexel was held scoreless for the entire second quarter and didn’t score again until Ben McIntosh’s goal with 6:12 left in the third to put a stop to Denver’s 10-0 run.
“Our kids all year long have shown a lot of poise in that situation when we’ve gotten down. They know it’s a long game, a 60-minute game, and five or 10 minutes earlier isn’t going to be the end of it, so, needed to get into their grove and they did that and stayed poised got what we needed to do,” said DU Head Coach Bill Tierney.
Drexel (13-5) was playing in its first NCAA tournament. The Dragons made the quarterfinals with a 16-11 upset of fourth-seeded Penn a week ago.
