Racers Feel The Need For Legal Speed At Bandimere

MORRISON, Colo. (CBS4)- Drag racers hit the track at Bandimere Speedway to see just how fast they could go in a legal racing event designed to get street racers off the street and onto the track.

Street racing is illegal and can have deadly consequences. In December 2013, Louis Sanchez, 17, was killed while watching a street race in Aurora.

Colorado State Troopers are trying to save lives by inviting drivers to race on the track at Bandimere. They hope the use of an actual race track will keep drivers from using populated streets to race.

The raceway holds an open race program every Wednesday in the summer months.

Hot rods, modified race cars and everyday vehicles are using the track.

Law enforcement hope street racers will use this venue not only because it is legal at the track but also because it's safe.

For first timers it can be an eye-opening experience.

"It's so fun!" said one driver.

"It's crazy!" said one passenger. "It's awesome!"

"It's a lot of fun," said one Colorado State Trooper Josh Lewis.

The plan is to make highways safer in Colorado.
