Aurora police spokesman Lt. Jeff Turner said so far it's not clear why a silver Lexis sedan veered across southbound traffic and hit a white Land Rover SUV in the middle lanes.

"They hit each other essentially head-to-head," Turner said. "The impact spun the SUV and the sedan rolled over landing on its roof adjacent to the roadway."

Two men in the Lexis were killed and a woman driving the SUV was hurt. Her injuries were described as being non-life threatening.

"The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene," Turner said.

Turner said excessive speed by the sedan may have contributed to the crash. He said the two men were not wearing seat belts. The woman in the SUV was wearing a seat belt.

The southbound lanes of Havana were closed at 1st after the crash.

Drivers trying to get around the blockage were advised to take Delmar out to Peoria.

Police were asking people to stay out of the area as they investigate what happened.
