Plan To Seal Minor Pot Convictions Fails

DENVER (AP) - A Colorado proposal to seal the criminal records for some minor marijuana convictions has failed.

A Senate committee rejected a measure Thursday to allow people convicted of some minor marijuana offenses that would be legal now to petition district courts to have their records sealed.

Lawmakers from both parties on the Senate Appropriations Committee joined in shelving the measure. One lawmaker pointed out that the bill was amended to apply only to crimes that were considered petty offenses even before legalization, offenses that can be sealed now.

Marijuana activists had hoped the measure would open to door to broader sealing of pot-related convictions.
