Englewood Police Announce Arrest Of Suspected Police Impersonator

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Englewood police say they have arrested a man who impersonated a police officer.

Authorities say officers arrested Leslie Dewayne Simpson, 36, on Friday in the 3200 block of South Broadway.

Police say two women who are process servers went to Legacy Motors located at 3247 South Broadway to serve civil paperwork to an employee who wasn't there. When they left they were approached by the suspect while in their car parked off Broadway. The man flashed a badge and told them he was a police officer.

"He was just trying to scare them off because he has some type of relationship with that business, which is where they were going to serve that paperwork," Sgt. Brian Cousianeau with Englewood police said.

Englewood police say Simpson flashed a badge at the women who then called police because they were scared.

"What he claims is he's a bail bonds agent, but still it doesn't give him the authority to present himself as a police officer and scare these two young women," Cousianeau said.

The owner of Legacy Motors said the suspect had been at the dealership to apply for a mechanic job.

District Attorney George Brauchler says impersonating a police officer is a felony and punishable up to 18 months in jail.

"When someone impersonates a peace officer they attack the integrity of a system that's based on that trust and faith," Brauchler said. "It puts the public at risk for not pulling over for a legitimate officer."

Detectives are checking with five other metro areas police agencies to see if this case is connected to any other.

When in doubt, citizens should call 911 and verify if who they are dealing with is a real police officer.
