DENVER (AP) – The Colorado Avalanche didn’t tinker too much with their roster at the trade deadline, making only a minor move to acquire goaltender Reto Berra from the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

In exchange for the 27-year-old Berra, Colorado surrendered a 2014 second-round pick to Calgary.

Berra joins a goaltending crew that includes starter Semyon Varlamov and reliable backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Berra was 9-17-2 for the Flames this season, with a 2.95 goals-against average.

Joe Sakic, the team’s executive vice president of hockey operations, says the deal “further solidified our goaltending situation, for the present and future.”

The Avalanche are off to one of their best starts in franchise history. They’re fifth in the Western Conference race and in prime position to make the postseason for the first time since 2010.
