Avocado Shortage Could Mean Higher Prices, Menu Changes

DENVER (CBS4)- Avocados are already in short supply because of the ongoing drought in California and that could prompt some changes in menu items at your favorite restaurant.

Some scientists predict climate change will cause a 40 percent drop in California avocado production over the next three decades.

"We're concerned about avocados, limes and tomatoes. We know the world is changing and we make our best effort to get them," said one restaurant manager Ernesto Juarez.

Denver-based Chipotle is paying close attention because the chain uses 35 million pounds of avocados every year.

Chipotle is warning investors that a shortage could mean higher prices and even the end of guacamole sales.
