DENVER (AP) – Colorado’s executive director of public safety is resigning to launch his own security consulting firm in the state.

Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper announced Thursday that Jim Davis will leave his post at the end of March.

Davis held his current job since February 2011, and oversaw the consolidation of state agencies under his department, including homeland security, wildland firefighting, and emergency management.

He was previously the special agent in charge of the FBI in Denver, where he directed the investigation and arrest in 2009 of shuttle driver Najibullah Zazi, who was part of an international terrorism probe of a plot to bomb New York City subways.

He was also the senior law enforcement official during the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008.
