Fort Collins High School Celebrates ‘America Day’

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — About 100 people waved American flags outside Fort Collins High School as students celebrated what was officially called “America Day” Monday.

The event created some controversy because of its name and reports that the event was being banned altogether.

Administrators say the student council proposed calling it “‘Merica Monday” based on its alliteration. Administrators barred using the slang name and eventually settled on “America Day.”

School freshman Anthony Detwiller joined those waving flags but told The Coloradoan that he wishes the school event hadn’t drawn so much outside attention.

The event is the first day of “Spread the Love” week, in which students are encouraged to donate money to a charity that provides short-term care to children with disabilities to help their parents.
