Colorado Springs Airport Installs 'Amnesty Pot Boxes'

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – Even though recreational marijuana may now be legal in Colorado, it's still prohibited to bring it into airports. So the Colorado Springs Airport has installed "amnesty boxes" so people can drop of pot they may have brought with them.

The boxes are similar to some that are already in place for travelers to leave banned items such as pocket knives and large fluid containers.

Airport officials say it's legal to leave pot in a vehicle in the airport parking lots and encourage travelers to do so.

Medical marijuana is also prohibited.

Anyone caught attempting to travel with marijuana is subjected to a fine of up to $2,500 and jail time.

Officials at Denver International Airport said they won't be installing amnesty boxes. They say they won't arrest people for having pot inside the airport but rather issue an administrative citation. Those who accidentally bring pot to the airport should throw it in the trash.
