HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. (CBS4) – Police have taken two juvenile male suspects into custody after a chemical device ruptured at SkyView Academy Tuesday morning.

Authorities said that the chemical reaction within the device caused it to rupture. They say the incident was not an accident.

Police searched the home of one of the suspects Tuesday night, taking out several bags of evidence.

Sgt. Ron Hanavan with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said nine patients were evaluated. Five patients were transported to an area hospital as a precaution; four students and one teacher.

According to Hanavan, as of Tuesday evening all patients have been medically cleared and released.

Police said that no physical damage was sustained to the classroom. The classroom the incident happened in is not a chemistry lab.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Littleton Fire Department and South Metro Fire Department responded to the school to try to determine if it was a malicious or accidental event.

“I don’t exactly know. I guess some high schooler mixed chemicals or something and a gas spilled. I don’t exactly know yet, though,” a student said.

Police are asking parents to speak with their students to see if they have any more information on the event.

Authorities said that SkyView Academy will have school on Wednesday with an increased officer presence.

The names of those in custody haven’t been release because they are juveniles.

SkyView Academy is a Douglas County charter school located in the 6100 black Business Center Drive in Highlands Ranch.
