Stepfather Shoots, Kills Daughter Apparently By Accident

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Colorado Springs say a 14-year-old girl died on Monday after her stepfather shot her, apparently thinking she was a burglar.

The incident happened just before 6 a.m. on the 4300 block of Ascendant Drive. Police say they received a report at that time that there was a burglary in progress.

When police arrived they found the girl with a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital and died soon afterwards.

"It has been determined that the victim's stepfather is the individual who shot the firearm, striking the victim who was a resident of the involved home," police wrote in a prepared statement.

Police said they are continuing to investigation the incident. So far it's not clear if any charges will be filed in the case.

Authorities said there's no reason to think there's any danger to the public following the shooting.
