Springs, Fountain Police Meet With Afghan police

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – Three Colorado police executives who traveled to Afghanistan say they gained a new respect for U.S. troops and a better appreciation of the stress they’re under.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Pete Carey, Deputy Chief Mark Smith and Fountain Police Chief Todd Evans spent most of last week in Afghanistan as guests of Fort Carson-based commanders.

Fort Carson is adjacent to Colorado Springs and Fountain.

Army Lt. Col. Timothy MacDonald says it was a first-of-a-kind visit by civilian police executives.

The chiefs met with commanders of local and national police in Afghanistan and discussed leadership, training and community policing.

The chiefs say they were impressed by the work U.S. soldiers are doing and have a better understanding of the stress they’re dealing with when they return to the U.S.
