Panel Adopts New Spill Reporting Rules In Colorado

DENVER (AP) - Colorado drilling regulators have adopted new reporting requirements for spills of oil and exploration and production waste.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission says operators now must report any spill of one barrel or more within 24 hours if the spill escapes containment areas.

Any spill of five barrels or more must be reported within 24 hours, as well as spills that may affect waterways, water supplies, residences and livestock.

Previously, operators were required to report spills of 20 barrels or more.

The commission adopted the rules Tuesday.

Commission director Matt Lepore said the new rules will improve the state's ability to respond to spills.
