DENVER (CBS4) - As the City and County of Denver prepares for retail marijuana businesses to open on Jan. 1, a new website was launched Monday as a public education effort.

The site MarijuanaInfoDenver.org is intended to be an informational overview of marijuana laws in Denver, but authorities remind people that it's up to them to know the laws.

"Denver's new website and public education effort launched today will help residents, businesses and visitors understand what is and is not allowed under retail marijuana laws within the city," Mayor Michael Hancock's Office said in a statement.

The site will be updated as marijuana laws evolve. It applies in Denver only and not to other municipalities in Colorado.

"We promised the people of Denver that we would implement Amendment 64 in a responsible manner, protecting our neighborhoods, our children and our quality of life," Hancock said. "We continue to work hard to balance the divergent needs and wants of many in the community."

Hancock said that means respecting the will of the voters who approved Amendment 64.
