Guards said Christopher Robb was trying to steal a car at the Northfield mall on Wednesday night. They said he was trying to hotwire a security guard's vehicle when another guard caught him.

In the confrontation that followed, police say Robb swung a hatchet and struck the guard in the right temple with the blade. He then allegedly held the hatchet to the victim's nose and cut him, saying "You're no cop."

After the man ran away Denver officers used the suspect's footprints to determine that he had run to a nearby truck stop.

SWAT officers and a canine unit trapped the suspect, who was hiding in a line of semis that were parked there overnight. The suspect then dropped the hatchet and surrendered to police.

Security officials at the Northfield mall declined to comment about what happened.

Robb was in the Denver County Jail on Thursday night and was being held on charges including assault with a lethal cutting device and attempted vehicle theft.

The victim is recovering from the injuries sustained in the attack. That guard didn't require stitches.
