Utah State Blanks CSU 13-0

LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Joey DeMartino ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 35 carries as Utah State pushed past Colorado State 13-0 Saturday afternoon.

Nick Diaz also kicked two field goals for the Aggies (7-4, 6-1 Mountain West). It was the first shutout for the USU defense since 2003.

CSU running back Kapri Bibbs led the Rams (6-6, 4-3 MWC) with 54 yards on 18 carries. Bibbs came into the game ranked 8th in the nation with 131 yards per game. Both teams combined for only 376 yards total offense.

In a game dominated by field position and defense, the teams combined for 17 punts. Aggie punter Jaron Bentrude had a career-high eight punts placed within the 20-yard line. CSU quarterback Garret Grayson threw for 147 yards on 16-of-39 passing and was intercepted twice. Grayson was also sacked four times, all in the fourth quarter.

Diaz scored on field goals of 44 and 24 yards. A 33-yard attempt with 2:50 remaining in the game was blocked. An interception by Nick Vigil on the 29-yard line midway through the fourth quarter gave Diaz his second scoring opportunity.

In the first half, the teams combined for nine punts and the Rams also faked a punt for a successful first down. USU had six possessions in the half, three of which began in CSU territory, but were only able to manage a 3-0 halftime lead when Diaz nailed a 24-yard field goal.

The Rams had a 25-yard field goal attempt earlier in the second quarter, but Jared Robert's kick hit the uprights. A steady 25- to 30-mile-per-hour wind whipped through Romney Stadium for much of the contest.

Bibbs, who had gained more than 600 combined yards rushing in his last two games and led the nation in touchdowns with 25, was held to 40 yards in the first half as CSU had only 52 yards of total offense.

DeMartino has rushed for 100-plus yards for the fifth game this season and has more than 1,000 yards rushing in his career.

Saturday's game marked the first time USU did not score a first-half touchdown in its last 19 games and the first time USU has topped CSU in Logan since 1979.
