AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - An Aurora man was shot and a police officer was injured after the confrontation Friday that involved a short car chase.

Early in the afternoon Aurora police responded to a shoplifting report at a Best Buy located in the 13800 block of East Mississippi Avenue. The suspect, identified as Jonathan Steele, 26, left the scene and a description of his vehicle was given to police.

Officers located and stopped the vehicle on East Alameda Avenue.

"We stopped the vehicle. The officer was at the passenger side door, the vehicle sped away, the officer fell to the ground smacking his head on the concrete," said a Denver police spokeswoman.

Sometime during the confrontation the officer fired off one round.

Police followed the fleeing vehicle until it finally stopped on the East Iliff Avenue off-ramp of Interstate 225 South. Steele was taken to the hospital and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg before being released into police custody.

The police officer was also taken to the hospital and authorities say he is in good condition.
