Woman Killed In ATV Crash While Driver Fled From Police

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - One person is dead and another is in the hospital after an ATV crash in Fort Collins early Monday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m. police responded to a noise complaint. Authorities spotted a male and a female riding an ATV down International Drive.

The man driving the ATV was fleeing from an officer when the ATV collided with a roundabout at the intersection of International Drive and Bannock Street.

"When the officer turned on his back emergency lights the ATV driver took off at a high rate of speed. The officer turned to try and catch up with him and before he could get close he saw the ATV had crashed right," Sgt. Joel Tower with Fort Collins police said.

Police say the vehicle flipped into the air and both riders were thrown from it. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Authorities say the man, identified as Travis Ackerman, 29, and the woman both suffered serious injuries. The woman, whose name hasn't been released, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Ackerman was last listed in serious condition.

Police say that charges are pending and alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor.
