DU Officials Send Out Warning About Sex Assaults

DENVER (CBS4) - University of Denver police want to get the word out about a string of sex assaults that have taken place close to the campus.

Campus security sent out an email to students on Thursday alerting them of the assaults that happened at nearby homes and apartments. It warned that one of the incidents may have involved a date rape drug.

The email also included safety tips, such as not leaving drinks unattended, never accepting drinks from someone you don't know and using the "buddy system" when socializing.

"When someone goes as far as using a date rape drug, that's taking it to a whole new level," said DU spokesman Will Jones.

Students told CBS4 they will keep the warning in mind.

"Certainly (the message is) to be cautious," said Laura Shapiro. "I also think there should be more of a stance not just how to protect yourself, which is important, but also more of a stance of how it's important not to rape people."

The victims in each case did not file reports with Denver police. Campus safety officials say they will continue to investigate the incidents.
