Sex Offender Escapes From Police Headquarters

DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver and the surrounding metro area are searching for an escaped sex offender.

Eugene Martinez, 48, was left alone and managed to slip out of his handcuffs and escape from custody at Denver Police Headquarters. He's wanted for failure to register as a sex offender.

"We went upstairs to set up a room to do another interview with him. At that point in time, somehow, while we were upstairs he was able to escape his cuffs and he fled the building," Sonny Jackson with Denver police said.

Martinez had registered on Wyandot Street in Denver as a sex offender, but neighbors said he was no longer living there with his brother.

Martinez has an extensive history of sexual assault in both Pueblo and Denver dating back to 1994. He has contacts in the Denver metro area and Pueblo.

Martinez is about 5-foot-5 and about 120 pounds. He has a tattoo on his chest of a guitar with wings and the name "Diane." He also has a scar on his forehead and was last seen wearing a black zip-up hoodie and black jeans. Martinez had blue sweat pants under his jeans.

CBS4's Rick Sallinger obtained letters that Martinez wrote to a Denver judge about his case. They were sent earlier from jail. He wrote that there is no evidence that he was guilty of exposing himself at a school. He also claims he was properly registered as a sex offender.

Anyone who sees Martinez or knows his whereabouts is asked to call police in Denver. Do not attempt to contact him, call 911 immediately.

Anyone with information regarding Martinez is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). You can text to CRIMES (274637) then title DMCS and enter your message or send an e-mail to metro-denvercrimestoppers.com. If the information you provide leads to the arrest and charging of a wanted individual, you can receive a cash reward up to $2,000.
