DENVER (CBS4) - Police are searching for a motive after a man opened fire inside a Denver retirement community Thursday afternoon.

He critically wounded a manager and then killed himself inside the Metro Manor building, located at 1523 Quitman.

Police got a call at 2:30 about an active shooter inside and two people down.

The heavy police activity and then arrival of ambulances was a shock to many of ther residents in the high rise.

Residents identified the shooter as a man who lived in the building and the victim as the apartment manager. Some reports indicate the resident was upset about the manager's plans to inspect his apartment, something that resident Sharon Smith told CBS4 happens on an annual basis.

"We are warned ahead of time that a specific number of apartments will be inspected, like for bugs and cleanliness," she said.

Denver police will not confirm a motive and only are saying the suspect turned the gun on himself and is now dead. The manager was listed in critical condition at the hospital.

A member of the management team that runs the building said everyone in the building is traumatized by what happened. She said residents were told to leave the building after the crime, and also that the man who was hurt does his job well.
