Longmont Police Investigate Murder, Attempted Suicide

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Longmont are investigating what led up to a murder and attempted suicide involving an elderly couple.

A 72-year-old woman was shot to death in an apartment at the Victoria Inn Apartments on 17th Ave. in Longmont on Thursday.

Police confirmed they received a phone call at 1:15 p.m. reporting the murder from inside the apartment.

"We received a call from an 80-year-old male that he had just shot his wife," said Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur.

The man then told police he was going to turn the gun on himself.

That's when police officers from Longmont and deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office surrounded the residence.

"We saw the SWAT team walking by our door. We opened our door to see what was going on and the first thing they said was 'Get back inside and close the door!,'" said neighbor Johnny Barnes.

What they found was a gruesome scene.

"We found an adult woman inside the apartment, the male has been transported to the hospital with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," said Satur.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 80-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital and was in critical condition as of Thursday evening.

"It was pretty traumatic because, you know, seeing all of those guns go by and somebody yelling at you to get back inside," said neighbor Neil Barnes.

Police investigators expect to be at the apartment gathering evidence throughout Thursday evening.
