Charges Filed In Deadly HOV Lane Crash

DENVER (CBS4) - The driver accused of causing a deadly wrong-way crash over the weekend has been formally charged.

The crash happened early Saturday morning in the Interstate 25 HOV lane near Park Avenue West.

Police say Rebecca Maez, 27, allegedly was going the wrong way and slammed head on into an SUV. The passenger in the SUV -- a mother of four -- was killed.

Maez has been formally charged with vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and driving while under revocation- alcohol related offense.

The charges alleged that Maez was driving drunk when she drove the wrong direction in the early morning hours of Aug. 31 and crashed into another vehicle, killing Jennifer Friede, 34, who was a passenger in the other vehicle.

Friede was known among her friends as Jenny Kush.

Maez remains in custody on an $80,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on Sept. 9 to be formally advised of the charges.

Maez has been previously arrested on DUI and DUI of drugs.

Friede's boyfriend was also injured in the crash but has since been released from the hospital.
