Gonzalez's Finger Injury Remains Troublesome

DENVER (AP) - Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez aggravated the sprained joint on his right middle finger during a minor league rehab assignment and likely will have to deal with the nagging injury for the rest of the season.

With this week's expansion of the active rosters, the Rockies decided to activate Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list anyway. They will look to play him again in a game once the pain and swelling in the joint abates.

Manager Walt Weiss said Tuesday he'll pick his spots to play Gonzalez, leaning on him to let him know how he feels.

"I expect that thing to flare up from time to time and I'll deal with it accordingly," Weiss said. "I think that's the way it's going to be. That thing is not going to heal till the offseason."

Gonzalez went on the DL retroactive to Aug. 5 and has missed 26 games while dealing with the issue. He is batting .302 with 26 homers and 70 RBIs in 103 games.

Weiss said a player might be able to play through such an injury in other sports, but baseball is different, especially when it comes to gripping and swinging the bat.

"Baseball, it's such a game of feel, that even a small injury to a finger or hand prevents you from playing this sport as opposed to many of the other sports," Weiss said before the Rockies hosted the Dodgers. "If you've got a finger that hurts, you can't throw or swing the bat. You can't play the game."
