Fire Tears Through Home In Highlands Neighborhood

DENVER (CBS4) - Residents of a Denver house say a fire that tore through their home overnight has completely destroyed the structure.

The fire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the house, located near the intersection of 38th and Shoshone Street in the city's Highlands area. Officials said they think the fire started outside and moved into the home.

Airamm Moreno was one of the eight people who lives in the home who got out safety after the flames broke out.

"I heard people screaming 'The house is burning! The house is burning!' " said Moreno, who had been sleeping upstairs. "My roommate knocked on my door really hard trying to see if I was okay and to get me out of my room."

"My mom was in the kitchen. She was trying to stop the fire with water. I was like 'We have to get out of here. Let's get out.' "

While the home was on fire the residents said they thought their dog might still have been inside. It turned out the dog -- named Juanito -- made it out safely.

The house was filled with musical instruments because family members in the home play salsa music. After the fire was out they were piling up the instruments that weren't destroyed on the front lawn, including congas and other drums.
