VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) - A 6-year-old boy has been hospitalized after being hit by a bus in Vail Village on Saturday.

Police say the boy was run over by a town bus just before 7 p.m. The driver told police he did not know he hit the boy until witnesses outside the bus told him what happened.

"Specifically where the accident occurred, vehicular traffic does go through there to access some of the loading and delivery areas and some of the hotels as well as the town busses," Sgt. Chris Botkins with Vail police said.

Employees in the area said they heard screams, and then emergency crews were quickly on scene and stayed for much of the night into the morning. Police called in the Colorado State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team. They're checking to see if the on-board videos show anything.

"We're looking at any of the area videos, mostly witness statements, witness accounts of what happened, obviously passengers on the bus and witnesses outside," Botkins said.

The boy was taken to the hospital in Vail but relocated to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment. He was listed in serious condition on Monday.

The boy's name hasn't been released.
