Udall, Army To Discuss Pinon Canyon Training Site

DENVER (AP) — Sen. Mark Udall says he's meeting with an Army official to discuss the future of a southeastern Colorado training site that has put nearby ranchers on edge for years.

Udall says he'll meet Tuesday at the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site with Katherine Hammack, assistant Army secretary for installations, energy and environment.

A news release issued Friday offered no details. Udall's spokesman declined to comment.

Local community leaders are expected to attend.

In recent years the Army has proposed and then withdrawn plans to expand the 367-square-mile site. Ranchers say expansion would take too much land out of agriculture and that the Army hasn't shown it needs more space.

As late as 2011, Army officials said they had no plans to expand the site for at least five years.
