Hazardous Chemical Spill Shuts Down Boulder Courthouse

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4)- A hazardous chemical spill shut down the Boulder County Courthouse on Thursday afternoon.

The building located along the Pearl Street Mall was evacuated and closed for hours while crews investigated.

Eleven people suffered symptoms from the chemical reaction and one was rushed to the hospital with a burning sensation in the lungs and eyes.

Firefighters said the source of the irritation was bleach that had been accidentally mixed with other chemicals in the boiler room.

The vapors traveled through the east wing of the courthouse.

"When we arrived on scene we made sure we went in and did a full evacuation of the east wing of the courthouse. AMR arrived on scene and treated patients," said Boulder Fire Rescue spokeswoman Kim Scott.

The person responsible for the chemical reaction went to the hospital. He was treated and released.
