Crooks Targeting Fort Collins Utilities Customers

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Fort Collins police are looking into reports of phony collections calls.

Police say someone has been calling Fort Collins utilities customers demanding immediate payment. If the customers don't pay up the caller threatens to shut off their utilities in 30 minutes. The intended victims were told to go to a local business and wire money to the suspect.

Fort Collins police are warning residents to watch out for utility fraud. They say real calls from Fort Collins utilities will display their number on the caller ID. City staff will always wear uniforms and carry the proper paperwork and identification.

Payment requests from employees will never be demanded within 30 minutes, and the city of Fort Collins Utilities Department will never tell their customers to wire money into an unknown account.
