Bat In Mesa County Tests Positive For Rabies

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Health officials say a bat in Mesa County has tested positive for rabies, and pets that had contact with it have been quarantined.

County health officials were reminding pet owners to keep their animals' rabies vaccinations current.

People and animals can be infected with the fatal rabies virus from the bite or saliva of a rabid animal. There is no treatment once symptoms appear.

The last human case of rabies in Colorado was reported in 1931.
