Hikers Find Human Remains Near Town Of Rulison

RULISON, Colo. (CBS4) - There's a mystery on the Western Slope after hikers found human remains near the town of Rulison in Garfield County.

Investigators are really not sure of much because the body had been in the location for a long time.

A group was hiking just off of County Road 309 on Friday afternoon when they stumbled upon the remains. It's a sparsely traveled road connecting Rulison and Battlement Mesa on the south side of Interstate 70 and the Colorado River.

The area where the remains were found was on an oil and gas company's property. It's not clear how long the remains had been there, and exactly how much of a skeleton was recovered.

Saturday morning investigators from Garfield County and the CBI spent nine hours surveying the scene and collecting evidence.

"Once we identified that it sure looked like human remains we needed to call in the experts to get some DNA samples and find out what we had there," Walt Stowe with the Garfield County Sheriff's Office said. "We are treating this like a homicide investigation at this point."

There currently aren't any reports of missing people in Garfield County.
