BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) – A teenager accused of stabbing his friend to death with a hunting knife in western Boulder County is in police custody.
The crime happened early Wednesday morning during a camping trip in a remote area near Nederland.
Spencer Crawford, 19, of Boulder, is in custody. He’s accused of stabbing Angus Gaudin, 17, in the chest during a fight.
The two were in the same group of 11 friends camping together in a secluded private area that’s accessible only by steep winding dirt roads.
Some or all of the teens are students at New Vista High School in Boulder.
Investigators said they suspect the teens were drinking and using hallucinogenic drugs when a fight started.
“I’d certainly say that there was likely some drug use and some alcohol use combined together that got them so high that maybe they weren’t quite sure what they were doing or became paranoid of one another,” Boulder County Sheriff’s office spokesman Cmdr. Scot Williams said.
They say the victim and attacker possibly became paranoid of each other.
So far Crawford’s booking photo so far hasn’t been released.
