Springs Woman Shoots At Man Breaking In Her Bedroom Window

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - She saw an intruder trying to break in through her bedroom window in Colorado Springs, but the quick-thinking woman decided to grab her gun and pull the trigger.

"It was a very beautiful night, my windows were open," Diana Richter said.

Richter refused to be a victim.

"I took a deep breath and prayed to God to give me the strength," she said.

Early Sunday morning Richter woke up to the sound of the screen being removed from her bedroom window.

"It's a very scary thing that I to used them," she said, showing her ammunition.

She grabbed her 380 handgun and screamed.

"'I'll shoot you. I don't know who you are, but I will shoot you.' "

Seconds later she saw a man climb through the window.

"And then all of a sudden I (saw) his foot move and I (saw) his Nike shoe."

Richter said she has four brothers in the military and grew up around guns. She fired five shots. He jumped from the window and hid behind a tree before sprinting down the street. One bullet hit the tree, missing him by inches.

"Whoever you are, you're lucky you got away this time, but God has my back," she said.

"I think she is blessed, and I think she should aim better," neighbor Bruce Roderick said.

Roderick said Richter is the talk of the town.

"I think she's a hero in the neighborhood. If someone tries to break in to our house, I would love to have her next door," Roderick said.

As police continue their search for the intruder, Richter has a message of empowerment for all women.

"Tell women it's okay to stand up. Don't be scared to stand up to somebody at any time," she said.

The intruder is still on the loose.
